Need for Cybersecurity Education in Schools: Proposal for Specific Course Inclusion

The Committee on Education of the Parliament discussed the need to strengthen cybersecurity in schools and establish a national strategy on the issue. MP Savvia Orphanidou emphasized the importance of digital education from a young age due to the increasing use of the internet by children and the risks involved, such as addiction, bullying, and sexual harassment. It was proposed to include a specific cybersecurity course in schools, based on a bill by Fotini Tsiridou. Representatives from the Police (Electronic Crime Sub-Directorate) and the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation highlighted the importance of prevention and continuous education on cybersecurity issues, while it was reported that 117 cases of cyberbullying were reported for 2025. The representative of the Digital Security Authority stressed that the inclusion of cybersecurity in the school curriculum is essential for changing the culture. The Ministry of Education stated that the issue is included in broader policies and aims at the responsible use of technology and the development of critical thinking skills in students. Finally, representatives of organizations such as Women4Cyber Cyprus and the Cypriot Center for Safe Internet emphasized the importance of raising awareness and providing information on the safe use of the internet, as well as the need to address the problem of parents' lack of control over their children's online activities.
