Development Without Water: The Cypriot Paradox

Cyprus is facing its worst water crisis in history, with the risk of desertification. Desalination units are insufficient to meet the growing demand, especially during the summer months with the increase in tourism. Despite government announcements of new projects, there is a significant omission: the lack of mandatory investments and water supply plans for large developments and the construction sector. Development is prioritized over securing water, further burdening already limited resources. Agriculture, a vital sector for food security and the countryside, faces cuts in irrigation. The problem cannot be solved by consumer guilt, but by substantial changes in the way development and water resource management are approached. Without a sustainable approach, development will continue to exacerbate the water crisis.
