Potentially the Most Massive Black Hole Ever Detected Discovered

Astronomers have discovered what is potentially the most massive black hole ever detected, located in the Cosmic Horseshoe galaxy. Its mass is estimated to be 36 billion times the mass of the Sun, approaching the theoretical upper limit for the size of a black hole. The Cosmic Horseshoe is one of the most massive galaxies ever observed, with its size warping spacetime and creating a giant Einstein ring. The discovery was made using a combination of gravitational lensing and stellar kinematics, the latter being considered the most reliable measure of black hole mass. This method allowed researchers to measure the black hole's mass with greater accuracy compared to previous measurements. Scientists believe that every galaxy has a supermassive black hole at its center, with the largest galaxies hosting the largest black holes. The new discovery provides valuable insights into the growth and evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. Professor Thomas Collett, one of the researchers, stated that this is one of the 10 most massive black holes ever discovered and likely the most massive, due to the high accuracy of the measurement.
