Mount Vardousia Climbers Died of Asphyxiation – Forensic Examination Reveals

The forensic examination of the bodies of the four climbers who lost their lives in Mount Vardousia revealed they died of asphyxiation. No external injuries were found, and the assessment is that they were buried by large amounts of snow. Investigations had indicated that an avalanche occurred, sweeping them away. According to the community president, it is possible that the climbers themselves triggered the avalanche. EMAK located the bodies with the help of a smartwatch that recorded their route. Rescuers report that the avalanche may also have been caused by the good weather conditions, as sunshine and rising temperatures may have melted layers of snow.
