Trade Unions of EAC Demand Withdrawal of Telecommunications Bill

Trade unions operating within the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) are calling for the withdrawal of the bill to amend the Telecommunications Law, expressing strong reservations about the involvement of the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CyTA) in the electricity market. The trade unions argue that the proposed change is being promoted without public consultation or impact assessment. According to the organizations, the regulation would allow CyTA to operate as a producer and supplier of electricity on commercial terms, without the restrictions that apply to the EAC, creating “two-speed public organizations.” They express doubts as to whether CyTA's entry into the electricity market will enhance competition, given that eleven suppliers and over 200 private producers are already active. Furthermore, they argue that CyTA's involvement in renewable energy sources will not reduce the overall operating cost of the electricity system and may increase fixed costs, which will be passed on to consumers. They also raise issues of energy security and potential conflicts of interest, arguing that CyTA's entry into the energy sector could create market distortions. The trade unions conclude that achieving lower electricity costs and a fair green transition requires “clear institutional roles” and not competition between two public organizations, warning that the passage of the bill could lead to further increases in electricity costs for consumers.
