Cable car accident in Italy: 4 injured, 100 passengers stranded

Four people were injured on Tuesday morning (30/12) in an accident involving a cable car in Macugnaga, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont, Italy. According to Italian media, four people - three passengers and an operator - were injured when the cable car cabin arrived at the station at excessive speed. According to initial reports, the cabin did not slow down properly as it entered the station and collided with the fixed safety bar. Initial indications suggest that the braking system did not work properly as it entered the station and the cabin hit the protective barrier,” said Filippo Bessotti, CEO of Macugnaga Trasporti e Servizi, the company responsible for managing the cable car, to the Italian news agency ANSA. He added that none of the injured are in critical condition. “Fortunately, there are no seriously injured or life-threatening cases. A total of six people are involved from a health perspective. The most serious case concerns a 59-year-old with a hand injury, while the others have minor abrasions,” he said. Referring to the causes of the accident, Bessotti explained that the braking system “did not work correctly and the emergency systems were activated”. As he noted, the cable car does not appear to have suffered serious damage, however thorough technical inspections will follow. The evacuation operation was completed shortly before 2:45 PM, when all approximately 100 people who had been stranded in the Passo del Moro area, at an altitude of about 2,800 meters, were safely removed after the cable car stopped operating due to the accident. All passengers were safely transported back to the base.
