Nine Measures Announced to Support Livestock Farmers Affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease – Cost Reaches €28 Million

The Council of Ministers has decided on a package of nine measures to support livestock farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease. The measures include immediate financial assistance as an advance on compensation, compensation for hay, animal feed and animal products, income support for 12 months, and support for the purchase of animals. The total cost of the measures so far amounts to €28 million. President Christodoulides stressed that the Government responds immediately to crises, citing the fires in the mountainous region of Limassol and the current crisis with foot-and-mouth disease as examples. The Government has already begun to pay the advance on compensation to the beneficiaries. The measures aim to fully compensate the affected, support their income and quickly reactivate livestock production. The Government will undertake the transport of animals from areas outside Cyprus that are free from the disease, as well as the purchase of animals from domestic units. The Minister of Agriculture stated that the measures concern the compensation and reactivation of the affected livestock farmers, with the aim of providing immediate and substantial support to the sector.
