This Region Will Welcome 2026 First

The region that will welcome 2026 first is the island groups of Samoa and Kiribati in the Pacific. Due to their geographical location, they are the first to greet the new year, beating New Zealand and other Pacific islands. This difference is due to their position just west of the international date line. The history of the islands is unique. Kiribati was divided until the mid-1990s into two parts with a one-day difference, creating problems for businesses. In Samoa, the division between American and European Samoa, with different administrations and a time difference, also had its peculiarities. In 2011, Samoa changed its position on the date line to facilitate trade with the United States, making it the first to celebrate the New Year.
