Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak: Deputy Mayor Criticizes Lack of State Support

The Deputy Mayor of Geri, Neofytos Papalazarou, strongly criticized the absence of the state and veterinary services in addressing the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the area. According to Mr. Papalazarou, farmers were not informed in time about preventive measures and did not receive the necessary support. The situation has affected approximately 80 livestock units with thousands of animals in Geri. The measures taken to limit the spread of the virus were initiated by the farmers themselves and the local authority, such as closing entrances and exits to the area, disinfecting vehicles, and strengthening farms with medication. Farmers express their frustration with the lack of state intervention and demand immediate information about the consequences of the disease. Mr. Papalazarou emphasized that providing compensation is not enough, but essential is the substantial support of farmers by the state, given the great impact they have suffered from the loss of their animals. The absence of the state is considered a serious problem that exacerbates the crisis. The situation in Geri highlights the need for better coordination and a rapid response from state services in crisis situations affecting the livestock sector. Timely information, support, and preventive measures are essential to protect livestock and the agricultural economy.
