UK: Meningitis Cases Rise to 27

In the UK, the number of confirmed and suspected cases of bacterial meningitis caused by meningococcus has risen to 27, from 20 yesterday. Two young people have lost their lives. Prophylactic antibiotic treatment is being given to students at the University of Kent and anyone who visited the Chemistry Club in Canterbury between March 5th and 7th. A vaccination campaign has started at the University of Kent, which may be extended. The UK Health Secretary described the outbreak as “unprecedented” and is expected to visit a vaccination center. One case has also been reported in France.
