George Vassiliou, who recently passed away, was a multifaceted personality with a significant contribution to Cyprus. Born in Famagusta in 1931, he spent his early years as a refugee in Greece. He initially studied medicine in Geneva, but later devoted himself to economics, earning a doctorate from the University of Budapest and specializing in marketing in London. Returning to Cyprus, he attempted to join the British administration, but was not given the opportunity due to his studies in a communist country. His political career began with his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, where he was elected in 1988 with the support of AKEL and other political forces. During his presidency, he focused on the Cyprus issue, facing the difficulties posed by Turkey. Vassiliou is considered by many to be a visionary and principled politician who always put the interests of his country first. His contribution to the development of Cyprus and the promotion of education is recognized by all political circles.
