96% of Cypriot Fishermen Say State Intervention in Fisheries is Insufficient

A new Oceana survey highlights the concerns of Cypriot fishermen regarding insufficient state intervention in fisheries, declining fish stocks, and the sustainability of the profession. The survey shows that 96% of fishermen believe state support is inadequate. The biggest challenge facing fishermen is the lack of fish (72%), while 68% report that climate change and invasive species are affecting fishing conditions. Fishermen believe (98%) that enhanced habitat protection can help restore stocks, provided measures are applied consistently and compensation is provided. Oceana calls on Cypriot authorities to take specific interventions, such as ensuring the implementation of existing rules, treating fishermen as partners in their implementation, strengthening the protection of marine areas, and reducing administrative burdens. The survey was conducted in six fishing shelters with interviews with 47 professional fishermen and examines the implementation of the EU Common Fisheries Policy in Cyprus. Oceana emphasizes that sustainable fisheries require implementation, fairness, and accountability.
