Larnaca Municipality Refuses Responsibility for Waste Management Without Clarity

The Larnaca Provincial Self-Government Organization (PSGO) states that it will not take responsibility for solid waste management unless there is full institutional, technical, and financial clarity. The President of the PSGO of Larnaca, Angelos Chatzicharalambous, emphasizes that waste management is an important issue that requires serious planning, clarity, and financial sustainability, rejecting hasty decisions or the transfer of responsibilities without a clear framework. Mr. Chatzicharalambous stresses that the PSGO of Larnaca needs a complete picture of the institutional framework, the technical data of the infrastructure, and the financial parameters before taking on any additional responsibility. He points out that the national strategy for solid waste is still in the process of completion, with a horizon of 2028, and that critical infrastructure, such as the Koshi unit, is still in the stage of studies and evaluations. The PSGO of Larnaca approaches the issue with a sense of responsibility towards citizens and local communities, insisting that waste management must be based on a comprehensive, functional, and financially sustainable model that ensures environmental protection and a fair distribution of costs. Mr. Chatzicharalambous reiterates that the PSGO of Larnaca cannot take responsibility in a system whose institutional, technical, and financial parameters have not been fully regulated. He concludes that the State must present a comprehensive and costed framework, while local government is ready to contribute responsibly to a modern and effective waste management policy.
