DISY on Foot and Mouth Disease: Responsibilities Exist – Protect Exports

The Democratic Rally (DISY) expressed the view that there are responsibilities for the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, pointing out that the government was slow to take preventive measures. However, it welcomed the adoption of some of its proposals, such as the establishment of a Special Scientific Committee and the provision of compensation and reactivation measures for livestock farmers. DISY emphasized the need for immediate containment of the virus, substantial support for livestock farmers, and protection of halloumi exports. It expressed concern about the spread of the virus to the province of Nicosia and called for a review of support measures so that livestock farmers do not suffer further economic damage.
