Pensioners' Union Expresses Concern Over Rising Drug Costs

The Cyprus Pensioners' Union (EKUSY) expresses strong concern over rising drug costs, which financially burden pensioners. The increases are due to changes in drug categories within the General Health System (GHS), due to patent expirations and price differences. EKUSY points out that the GHS does not cover over-the-counter drugs, resulting in pensioners paying significant amounts from their pensions to cover basic health needs. Recent changes have led to additional increases in the contribution for drugs taken on a permanent basis. Complaints from pensioners report significant increases in drugs such as anticoagulants, with the cost exceeding 20 euros per package. The total monthly cost of drugs, prescription and over-the-counter, exceeds 100 euros for many low-income pensioners, putting their proper adherence to treatment at risk. EKUSY calls on the Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) to take measures to address the situation, such as restoring drug prices to previous levels, preventing cost shifting to pensioners, and examining the coverage of necessary over-the-counter drugs by the GHS, especially for pensioners and vulnerable groups.
