Right to Disembark for Seafarers in War Zones – No Cypriot Seafarers on 19 Ships Under Cypriot Flag in the Strait of Hormuz

Seafarers have the right to disembark from ships if they consider the areas they are sailing through to be dangerous due to war, according to Charalambos Avgousti, General Secretary of OMΕPEGE-SEK. The union prioritizes the safety of seafarers and informs that there are no Cypriot seafarers stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. However, there are seafarers covered by OMΕPEGE-SEK who are safe, although a ship they were on was attacked by a missile. The Star Gwyneth, owned by Greek interests, sustained damage but the crew is safe and has moved away from the area. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is participating in a meeting of the International Maritime Organization regarding the safety of seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz and throughout the region. The policy for war zones has been revised, including the entire Middle East, following the start of the war in Iran. The inclusion of the Eastern Mediterranean was discussed but avoided due to potential economic impacts. Mr. Avgousti emphasized that OMΕPEGE-SEK is in contact with the Deputy Ministry of Shipping and that the safety of seafarers is the top priority. Seafarers have the right not to travel in war zones and to disembark from ships. The union is monitoring the situation and cooperating with international organizations to protect seafarers. OMΕPEGE-SEK has taken measures to protect seafarers and is in close cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Shipping and the ITF. The union will continue to monitor the situation and defend the rights of seafarers, ensuring their safety in dangerous areas.
