Lawyers: Changes to their entry into the profession by the Legal Council

The Legal Council of Cyprus is proceeding with significant reforms to the framework for admitting trainee lawyers, aiming to strengthen practical training and adapt the profession to modern needs. The changes are deemed necessary due to the increasing complexity of cases and the need for more immediate and effective legal services. The new framework will be implemented from July 1, 2030, while those already trainees or registered by June 30, 2030, will continue to be subject to the existing system, with a completion deadline of June 2032. The revised system includes five basic thematic units covering important areas of law, such as public, criminal and civil law, as well as issues of ethics and court operations. Training will be conducted remotely via an electronic platform, with mandatory attendance of at least 70% of courses to participate in the exams. Exams will be held three times a year, with the main exam period in June. Trainees must pass all courses within three consecutive exam periods, securing at least 50% in each course. In case of failure, they will have the opportunity to extend their training for another 12 months, with a requirement for re-examination. The Legal Council emphasizes the importance of practical experience, as trainees will be required to complete a specific number of practical tasks, in addition to attending courses and taking exams. These changes aim to ensure a high level of lawyer training and better serve citizens.
