Published January 15, 2026, 08:27

The Greek government is on high alert following drone attacks on two tankers of Greek interests in the Black Sea. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Shipping, with an emphasis on protecting Greek-owned ships and their crews. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attacks, stressing that the ships were moving legally and are not involved in sanctions regimes. It emphasized that these actions violate International Law and the Law of the Sea, at a time of geopolitical instability. Greece has raised the issue at European level, seeking common coordination to strengthen security on maritime routes. The aim is to ensure navigation with as little risk as possible to human life and the environment. Two Greek sailors were on board one of the ships, but were not injured. Shipping Minister Vassilis Kikilias assured that safety is an absolute priority and the Ministry is in constant communication with the shipping community to strengthen the protection framework for Greek-owned ships, especially in high-risk areas. The government is committed to continuing its interventions at international and European level to prevent similar incidents.
