EU Prioritizes De-escalation and Avoidance of Tariffs Amid Greenland Dispute

The European Commission emphasizes that the EU's priority is dialogue and de-escalation, responding to threats from Donald Trump to impose tariffs on six EU countries over Greenland. European Council President Antonio Costa is convening an emergency leaders' summit on Thursday to coordinate the European response. The EU wishes to avoid the imposition of tariffs, as this would harm consumers and businesses. At the same time, it states it is ready to protect its economic interests and has the necessary tools. A meeting between Ursula von der Leyen and Donald Trump at Davos is not currently scheduled, but has not been ruled out. The suspension of EU countermeasures against the US expires on February 6, and the EU will decide whether to extend it.
