Bullying on Limassol School Buses – How it Happens and EMEL's Response

School bullying on school buses in Limassol has reached worrying levels. EMEL (Limassol Province Transport Company) reports an increase in incidents, especially at the beginning of the school year, with some cases requiring police intervention. The incidents mainly concern first-year junior high school students who are bullied by older students, with cases of racial discrimination or physical characteristics. Drivers, who are often witnesses to the incidents, try to protect the victims by moving them to the front seats. EMEL emphasizes the importance of cooperation with schools, parents and the police to address the problem. Informing schools and parental intervention have proven effective in some cases, while in serious cases there have been expulsions of students. Almost all EMEL buses are equipped with cameras, which can be used to document incidents and facilitate police investigations.
