Free Famagusta: Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade to Address Water Loss

The Water Development Department of Cyprus has submitted a proposal for the expansion and upgrade of the Paralimni and Ayia Napa Wastewater Treatment Plant, with a budget of €13 million. The project is considered essential due to increasing tourism and population growth, aiming to ensure adequate capacity and improve the quality of recycled water. The works will focus on strengthening tertiary treatment, so that the water is suitable for irrigation, reducing dependence on natural resources. In Paralimni, the capacity will increase by 100%, while in Ayia Napa by 130%. A significant part of the project is addressing water loss, which is estimated at 1 million cubic meters annually due to membrane degradation. Their complete replacement will help protect the water balance. In addition, the project provides for the elimination of chlorine gas for safety reasons and its replacement with modern sodium hypochlorite dosing units. The completion of the project is expected in 2027 and will make the Free Famagusta area a pioneer in wastewater treatment.
