Electric Vehicles Saved 1.7 Million Barrels of Oil Per Day in 2025

A new study by Ember shows that the global fleet of electric vehicles led to a saving of 1.7 million barrels of oil per day in 2025, an increase from 1.3 million in 2024. The study highlights that the electrification of vehicles can reduce global fossil fuel imports by a third, saving $600 billion annually. China and Europe are the biggest beneficiaries of this saving, with savings of $28 billion and $8 billion respectively. This saving is particularly significant amid geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global oil exports. The non-governmental organization Transport & Environment also points out the economic superiority of electric vehicles, especially with rising fuel prices, estimating annual savings of over €900 for electric vehicle owners in the EU.
