Local Authorities Set Conditions for Waste Management Takeover

Provincial Self-Governing Bodies (PSGBs) are setting clear conditions for taking over the management of solid waste from 2027, refusing to be burdened with previous financial obligations of the state. The President of the Nicosia PSGB, Konstantinos Giorgatzis, stated that they want to be sure they will not take over the responsibility with pending financial obligations. They are requesting information about the upgrade plans for the Koshi and Pentakomo sites, as well as the investigation into the mismanagement of these projects. They point out the lack of information about the investigation, which has been referred to the police. Mr. Giorgatzis denounced the increase in the cost of entry to waste disposal sites, without the implementation of waste sorting as planned. The President of the Larnaca PSGB, Angelos Chatzicharalambous, emphasized that the legislation does not clearly define what the PSGBs will receive and that waste management requires legal clarity and financial viability. He stressed that the changes at Koshi will not be ready before 2028. The PSGBs state they are ready to contribute to a responsible waste management policy, but require clear rules, planning and cooperation.
