Today's Feast Day: Remembering the Seventy Apostles and Other Saints

Today, the Orthodox Church honors the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles, the disciples of Christ who preached the Gospel throughout the world. Their memory emphasizes the missionary character of the Church and the spread of faith from its earliest years. Also commemorated are Saints Theoktistos, Nikiforos the Leper, Onuphrius the New Martyr, Apollinaria the Synklitiki, and Evagrius and Sios of Georgia. This day is part of the Forefeast of the Epiphany, also known as Sunday before the Lights, and calls the faithful to spiritual readiness in anticipation of the great feast. Those celebrating their name day include Apollinarios, Apollinaria, Evagrios, Evagria, and Onuphrius.
