USS Ford Returns to Souda After 30-Hour Fire – 'It Was Burning for 30 Hours,' Says NYT

The US aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford is expected to dock at the port of Souda tomorrow, Wednesday, for repairs and refueling, following a major fire that broke out and lasted for more than 30 hours. The fire started in the ship's laundry areas and spread through the ventilation shafts, causing problems for approximately 600 sailors who lost their beds. The fire caused injuries to two sailors, but their lives were not in danger. Despite the conditions, the US Navy announced that the ship's combat operations were not affected. The USS Gerald R. Ford is deployed in the Middle East on a 10-month mission and had previously faced other issues, such as with its toilets. The ship's return to Souda is causing reactions from unions and organizations in Chania, who express their opposition to the presence of the aircraft carrier and Greece's involvement in military missions. The Peace Committee of Chania is calling for a rally on Friday, March 20th, with the slogan “Neither land nor water to the murderers of the peoples!”. According to a New York Times report, the fire burned for more than 30 hours, with dozens of crew members experiencing problems from the smoke. The ship, after repairs and refueling in Souda, is not expected to continue operations in the Middle East but will return to the US.
