US Urged Syria to Send Troops to Lebanon to Disarm Hezbollah

The United States encouraged Syria to consider sending troops to eastern Lebanon to help disarm Hezbollah, however Damascus is hesitant, fearing involvement in the Middle East war and a rekindling of sectarian tensions. The idea was discussed between US and Syrian officials since last year, with Washington reiterating the request after the start of the war with Israel against Iran. Syria, despite its historical hostility towards Hezbollah and Iran, is moving cautiously after the US-Israeli attacks on Iran. It has deployed troops and missiles to the border with Lebanon, describing the move as defensive. Syrian officials agreed to stay out of the war and take only defensive measures. Lebanon has not received official information about the discussions between the US and Syria. The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, assured that Damascus respects Lebanon's national sovereignty and does not plan to intervene. The Lebanese army maintains open communication channels with Syria, but has received no indication of a possible cross-border operation. The US urging of Syria and Damascus's hesitation had not been previously reported. The State Department declined to comment on private diplomatic communications, referring to the governments of Syria and Lebanon for statements.
