Cyta Seeks Equal Treatment in Energy Market Access

Published February 9, 2026, 14:28

Cyta is seeking to operate in the energy market, requesting equal institutional treatment with the EAC (Authority of Cyprus). The President of Cyta, Maria Tsiakka, appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and emphasized that the organization aims to offer energy from renewable sources to consumers who do not have access to such solutions, such as young couples, renters, and small businesses. In the future, Cyta is considering the possibility of offering packages that combine energy, telecommunications services, and technology solutions. Ms. Tsiakka stressed that Cyta does not seek to compete with the EAC or private companies, but to purchase energy from them. She is requesting a modernized regulatory framework and believes it would be unfair if the amendment to its law is not promoted. The EAC, as she mentioned, has already held a license as a telecommunications provider since 2003, having granted its networks to telecommunications companies. The views of the Competition Commission, RAEK (Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority), and the State Aid Controller have already been requested. The State Aid Controller does not foresee changes in her role from Cyta's potential involvement in energy, while RAEK considers any initiative to participate in the market as welcome, but points out the need to examine any cooperation with the EAC due to its dominant position in the market. The Competition Protection Commission considers the entry of new companies into the market as positive, as it increases competition. Cyta must comply with the market operating framework and secure the necessary licenses. The bill to amend Cyta's law is under discussion in the Parliamentary Committee on Finance.
