Strong 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes off West Coast of the US - Zone Could Produce up to 9.0 Magnitude Tremors

A strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon, causing tremors felt in many cities along the US West Coast. The earthquake, recorded at 10:25 PM EST on Thursday, was followed by a 3.1 magnitude aftershock three hours later, with a 65% probability of further aftershocks over the weekend. Tremors were felt in cities such as Portland, Dallas, Eugene, Salem, and Coos Bay, and the region's tsunami warning system was also activated. The earthquake occurred along the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate and the Cascadia Subduction Zone – a 700-mile-long fault off the North American West Coast. Scientists have nicknamed the area the “Sleeping Giant” and warn that it is overdue for a devastating event that could reach a magnitude of 9.0, impacting much of the Pacific Northwest, including major cities like Seattle and Portland. Despite the intensity of the earthquake, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage. However, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have taken steps to address potential complications. The US Geological Survey estimates that there is a 1 in 50 chance of another significant earthquake (greater than 5.0 magnitude) occurring in the area within the next week. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow the guidance of authorities.
