New Regulations for Cesarean Sections: Reimbursement Criteria from February

From mid-February, the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) will implement new regulations for the reimbursement of cesarean sections. The new regulations will be based on specific criteria and documentation, aiming to ensure that cesareans are performed for medical reasons and not as a matter of choice. Cyprus has one of the highest rates of cesarean sections in Europe (60-62.3% since 2021), while the EU average ranges from 17% to 40%. The HIO will annually evaluate compliance with the new regulations and require detailed documentation of the reasons for each cesarean section, such as the baby's position, pregnancy complications, or risk to the mother and child.
