Commission: Questions on EU-Mercosur Deal Referral to CJEU are 'Unfounded'

The European Commission has dismissed as “unfounded” the questions raised by the European Parliament regarding the compatibility of the EU-Mercosur agreement with the EU Treaties. The Commission’s trade spokesperson, Olof Gill, emphasized the need for European producers to access new markets and to promote the EU’s trade agenda. The Commission argues that the questions have already been addressed in negotiations and previous agreements, and that the legal architecture of the agreement is fully compliant with the Treaties. Furthermore, it assured that controls on agricultural imports from Mercosur will not be reduced and that the safety of European consumers will not be jeopardized. The Commission committed to continuing consultations with the Council and the European Parliament before making further decisions.
