Commission: Mutual Assistance Clause for Cyprus Not Yet Considered

The European Commission has not yet discussed the activation of the mutual assistance clause for Cyprus, following the attack on British Bases. However, the Commission's chief spokesperson, Paula Pinio, stated that the issue will be discussed in the coming days at relevant meetings. The mutual assistance clause is provided for by the Treaty of Lisbon and provides for the obligation of member states to provide assistance in the event of an armed attack. The Commission is also considering the solidarity clause in the event of a terrorist attack or natural disaster. The College of Commissioners is in session to assess the situation, following meetings of the Foreign Ministers of the 27.
