EU Considers New Sanctions Against Iran Over Violent Protest Crackdown

Published January 12, 2026, 16:19

The European Union is moving towards tightening its stance on Iran, considering the imposition of new sanctions in response to the violent suppression of anti-government protests. The European Commission's spokesperson for foreign policy, Anwar Al Anooni, stated that the EU maintains its policy of “critical engagement” with Iran, but is prepared to take a stricter approach. Particular emphasis is being placed on the Revolutionary Guards, who are already subject to European sanctions and are considered a central pillar of the crackdown. The EU's legal framework already targets individuals and entities involved in human rights violations. The EU expresses its full solidarity with the Iranian people and condemns the use of violence against protesters, shocked by reports of casualties. Additional restrictive measures are being prepared, which will also target other individuals responsible for the suppression. The EU's next moves will be discussed in upcoming meetings, including the Foreign Affairs Council and an emergency meeting on political and security issues. Simultaneously, contacts with Iranian authorities continue through the Cypriot EU presidency.
