Kyriakos Kouros: Message to the United Kingdom – Protect Cyprus

The High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Kingdom, Kyriakos Kouros, adopted an unusually direct tone on Wednesday, stating in leading British media that the United Kingdom has a duty to protect not only its military installations in Cyprus, but also the Cypriot residents who live near them, as well as British residents throughout the island. The drone attack on March 2, which hit an aircraft hangar at RAF Akrotiri base, on the west coast of Cyprus, was the first direct air strike on British bases and caught both Cypriot and British authorities by surprise. Sources at Politis To The Point indicate that the drone was launched from southern Lebanon, implicating the Iran-backed Hezbollah organization in the attack. Although the Shahed-type drone caused limited damage, the consequences could have been much more serious, as shown in videos of other drone attacks of the same type. In other words, the British bases and, due to their proximity, the Cypriot residents living around them were lucky. Speaking on the BBC’s flagship news and current affairs program, Newsnight, Mr. Kouros said: “Many Britons talk about the bases in Cyprus, but they don’t have a clear picture that the bases in Cyprus – and the two together are smaller than 100 square miles – are full of Cypriots who live, live and work there.” He added that it is crucial for the Cypriot government to ensure the safety of civilians living in the bases areas, estimated at around 11,000 people. Citizens are afraid. Referring to the March 2 attack, Mr. Kouros said: “On the night of the incident, for example, the bases informed their personnel about the fact and how to deal with it, but not the people who lived inside the bases.” When Newsnight presenter Katie Razzall asked how people felt about this, the Cypriot diplomat replied: “Quite scared, quite panicked. And that is the feeling that prevails in Cyprus.” In a separate interview with Sky News and journalist Yalda Hakim, Mr. Kouros said: “The British people need to understand that the British bases in Cyprus cannot be treated as separate from the rest of the island. There are Cypriots who live within the British bases.” He also noted that the bases are not just military installations. While British personnel come and go depending on their term of service, Cypriots live there permanently.
