Kompous: EU Presence and Action in the Middle East Need to be Strengthened

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kompos stressed the need to strengthen the EU's presence and action in the Middle East region during his intervention at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels. He emphasized that the war in the Middle East should no longer be treated as a simple regional conflict, as it has global implications for energy, sea routes, and navigation safety. Mr. Kompos stated that the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency, the emphasis on the Middle East, the Gulf, and maritime security, have become a necessity. He proposed strengthening solidarity with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Lebanon, as well as accelerating the implementation of pending trade agreements. In addition, he referred to the new European security strategy, emphasizing the need for a broad and inclusive process. He expressed Cyprus's support for continuing and strengthening support for Ukraine, as well as the importance of strategic cooperation with India. The EU will host the Indian Foreign Minister, recognizing the strategic importance of relations with the country.
