Cyprus Aims to Bring 'New Approach' to EU Presidency

Cyprus takes over the EU Presidency tomorrow, with Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos stating that the country will bring a “new approach” to the Union’s agenda. Key issues to be at the forefront include defense, migration, and support for Ukraine, amid a period of geopolitical uncertainty. Kombos emphasized that Cyprus, as a small member state, will offer a different perspective and work with dedication to achieve the goals of the Presidency. Cyprus’s experience with conflict and occupation, due to the Turkish invasion, will be valuable in addressing the crisis in Ukraine. Despite historical ties with Russia, Cyprus has aligned with the EU in supporting Ukraine. Kombos assured that Cyprus will not obstruct relations between the EU and Turkey, and expressed his desire to see President Erdogan participate in the informal Council summit in April. Cyprus seeks to promote ambitious dossiers during its Presidency, while also managing tensions with Turkey. The country is committed to not using the Presidency to raise national issues, but to work for the common good of the European Union.
