Row Over Presence of Radiologist

Radiologists are raising concerns about the bill regulating the operation of radiology centers in Cyprus, arguing that its current form will allow centers to operate without a radiologist. They believe this will lead to a deterioration in the quality of services and endanger patient safety. The General Secretary of the Cyprus Radiological Society, Eleni Heracleous, points out that the absence of a radiologist during examinations disconnects the radiological act from the scientifically responsible doctor, raising legal and scientific responsibility issues. They argue that diagnosis should not be separated from medical supervision. Radiologists and radiologic technologists disagree on the need for a doctor's physical presence during all examinations. Technologists propose supervision and opinion through teleradiology, a practice applied in other European countries. They also disagree on the degree of risk of the examinations. The Cyprus Organization for Patients (OSAK) supports the presence of a doctor in radiology centers, but proposes differentiation depending on the type of examination, emphasizing the need for immediate medical coverage in the event of unforeseen incidents.
