Clash over Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Allegations of Obstructing Inspections and Responsibility on Farmers, by Christodoulos Pipis [audio]

Tensions are escalating between Veterinary Services and farmers in Geri, regarding measures for foot-and-mouth disease and allegations of obstructing inspections. The director of Veterinary Services, Christodoulos Pipis, stated that no fines have been imposed or threats of arrest made, but accused farmers of obstructing inspections and illegally transporting infected animals. He stressed the criticality of surveillance to limit the spread of the virus and the need for cooperation. Regarding delays in taking measures, Mr. Pipis referred to evaluations by the European Union, noting that the service reacted promptly. The reopening of units will depend on the completion of the culling and burial of infected animals and the sanitation of premises. Mr. Pipis accused farmers of worsening the situation due to lack of cooperation.
