Cyprus: Bus Drivers Risk Losing Jobs Due to Traffic Cameras

Dozens of bus drivers in Limassol are at risk of losing their driving licenses due to the accumulation of penalty points from violations recorded by traffic cameras. The violations mainly concern minor red light infringements, occurring in difficult driving conditions and with the aim of passenger safety. Route '30' of EMEL is particularly problematic, with drivers passing over 10,000 times a year through intersections with cameras. Drivers argue that the traffic light often turns red when the bus is already very close to the intersection, making safe braking impossible. Additionally, the length of the buses can lead to violations being recorded even when entering on orange light. Despite calls from unions for measures such as countdown timers and improved traffic light settings, there has been no response from the authorities. In some cases, incorrect traffic light settings have been identified, causing unfair complaints, but drivers continue to be burdened with fines and points. The situation has caused concern among professional drivers, who warn of dynamic reactions if there is no immediate intervention. The drivers fear that the continued accumulation of points will lead not only to job losses but also to a risk to the safety and efficiency of public transport. They call for a review of traffic light settings and a fairer treatment of violations recorded by the cameras.
