Larnaca: GBL Found in Water - How the Narcotic Substance Led to Tragedy

In Larnaca, suspicions were confirmed regarding the presence of the narcotic substance butyrolactone in the water consumed by five individuals, resulting in the death of a 78-year-old. The substance is used by drug users to produce a synthetic mixture that causes euphoria, but it can be dangerous to fatal. Police investigation is focused on the 44-year-old son of the victim, who has been involved in drug-related cases and was recently arrested with narcotics in the basement of his home. Butyrolactone is a colorless liquid organic compound that acts as a precursor to GHB, a potent central nervous system depressant, with effects similar to barbiturates or alcoholic substances. Consuming the substance can cause euphoria, relaxation, but also severe sedation, nausea, memory loss, and coma.
