State Funeral for Former President Vasiliou

The Council of Ministers has decided to honor the former President of the Republic, George Vasiliou, with the honors of an incumbent President. The decision was made at an emergency meeting chaired by Nikos Christodoulides, where a minute of silence was observed in his memory. President Christodoulides expressed the deep sorrow of the state for the loss of George Vasiliou, emphasizing his contribution to the economic development, social progress, and modernization of Cyprus, as well as his crucial role in the country's European path. In addition, a period of public mourning has been declared from today until the day of the funeral, with flags flying at half-mast on public buildings and schools, and the day of the funeral, Saturday, January 17th, has been declared a public holiday. Books of condolence have been opened at the Presidential Palace and at Cypriot diplomatic missions.
