Cyprus Prepares for Wildfire Season: Measures and Challenges

The Parliamentary Committee on the Environment was briefed on the state's prevention measures and readiness for the wildfire season. Relevant services presented their plans, while also highlighting the challenges they face, mainly in terms of staffing and operational coverage of the countryside. It was pointed out that a large number of businesses do not comply with fire safety measures. The Forestry Department reported that the firefighting fleet has been significantly strengthened, especially after inclusion in the Recovery and Resilience Plan. Three television surveillance systems have been put into operation, and seven drones are used to detect fires, although their use is temporarily prohibited due to international conditions. Standby programs, staff training, and maintenance of the firefighting fleet are expected to be completed by the end of March. Maintenance work on the forest road network and firebreaks will be completed by the end of May, while cleaning interventions are being carried out on rural roads. A new 42-member specialized wildfire fighting team has been created, consisting of members from the Forestry Department, the Fire Service, Civil Defense and the Ambulance Service. This team will be fully trained and certified to deal with forest fires and will be able to participate in missions abroad.
