Stylianos Genis, 31, has become the first road fatality in Cyprus for 2026, losing his life in a tragic accident in Paphos. While driving on a rural road in the Pentalia area, Genis lost control of his vehicle and plunged into a ravine. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is believed that the ground giving way due to rain contributed to the car overturning. Genis had gone to the area with a 35-year-old friend and their hunting dogs for training. After dropping off his friend and the dogs, he continued driving alone when the fatal accident occurred. The fire department had to intervene to extricate the driver, but it was too late. The accident occurred on a dirt road that was wet, which likely played a role in the loss of control of the vehicle. Authorities are examining all possibilities to determine the exact causes of the accident. Stylianos Genis's death brings the number of fatalities on Cypriot roads in 2025 to 45, exceeding the 2024 toll of 41. Authorities urge drivers to be particularly careful and adhere to the Highway Code in order to avoid similar tragic accidents.
