US Strikes on Drug Trafficking Vessels Leave Eight Dead

US armed forces carried out new strikes against vessels involved in drug trafficking, resulting in the deaths of eight people. Three strikes were carried out in international waters, while earlier on Wednesday another three vessels had been destroyed, with those on board abandoning ship before they sank. According to the Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), the vessels had formed a convoy. US authorities informed the Coast Guard to carry out a search and rescue operation, but it is not known if there were any survivors. President Trump has intensified military operations against Venezuela, seeking to force Nicolás Maduro to resign, accusing him of drug trafficking. Monday marked the first strike on Venezuelan territory, with the destruction of a pier used to load drugs. The legality of the US strikes is being questioned, while the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for an investigation into possible extrajudicial executions.
