Cyprus Supreme Court Rejects Appeal in 'Golden Passport' Case

The Cyprus Supreme Court unanimously rejected the appeal of M.K. to refer his case to a third level of justice, upholding the Court of Appeal's decision to overturn his initial acquittal and order a retrial. The case concerns the acquisition of Cypriot citizenship through the Cyprus Investment Program (CIP) by Tony Newman, with allegations that the declared identity details were false and that the real person was Iranian Mehdi Ebrahimi Eshratabadi. The indictment includes nine defendants and 34 charges related to forged documents, false statements, manipulation of assets, and money laundering. M.K. argued that the Court of Appeal exceeded its legal limits, but the Supreme Court ruled that there was no reason of wider importance to take the case to a third level.
