Zohran Mamdani Sworn In as Mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in today as the Mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment as he is the first Muslim to hold the office. The inauguration took place at a historic subway station in Manhattan, with Mamdani taking the oath on the Quran held by his wife, Rama Dua. He explained that the choice of location symbolizes a city striving for beauty and improving the lives of working people. The ceremony was brief and held before New York Attorney General Letitia James. Mamdani emphasized that taking office is “a lifetime honor and privilege.” The official inauguration will take place later today at the steps of City Hall, presided over by Senator Bernie Sanders. Approximately 4,000 guests are expected to attend the official ceremony, while the inauguration will be broadcast live on screens along Broadway for tens of thousands of citizens to watch. Mamdani’s team has dubbed the event “An Inauguration of a New Era.” Mamdani raised $2.6 million to fund the transition and celebrations, the largest amount raised by any New York City mayor since records began in 2001. After the inauguration, he will move from his Astoria apartment, protected from rent increases by the city’s rent stabilization program, to Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of New York City.
