UNFICYP Head to Brief Troop-Contributing Countries

Published January 13, 2026, 06:29

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, Kazim Diian, will brief today the countries contributing troops to UNFICYP. The briefing will take place behind closed doors in New York. On January 15th, Mr. Diian will update the UN Security Council on the situation in Cyprus, while on January 29th the Council will vote on renewing UNFICYP's mandate for another year. The United Kingdom has taken on the drafting of the relevant resolution. Greece, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and a guarantor power, plays a significant role in shaping the resolution. Following the collapse of talks in Crans-Montana in 2017, the lack of progress in restarting a formal political process remains the main issue. President Christodoulides and T/C leader Erhurman committed to continuing work for tangible results, while the use of the new resolution to encourage both sides to avoid actions that could undermine the political climate is expected to be discussed. The potential impact of fiscal adjustments on UNFICYP and the Good Offices of the UN Secretary-General will also be examined.
