Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Could Resume Operation in 15 Months

The head of the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Rami Galiev, stated that the plant could resume operation and generate energy in approximately 15 months, or by mid-2027, if the war in Ukraine ends. Currently, the plant is not producing electricity but requires external power to maintain cooling of the nuclear material and prevent a potential meltdown. Galiev mentioned that repairs to the transmission lines are needed, which are currently underway under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Additionally, “serious issues” need to be addressed, such as replenishing the cooling pond and restoring rail connections. The Zaporizhzhia plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been under Russian control since March 2022. Both Russia and Ukraine frequently accuse each other of shelling around the plant, raising serious concerns about nuclear safety. Meanwhile, Washington has proposed “robust” security guarantees to Kyiv for 15 years, as part of a broader effort to deter future attacks and enhance stability in the region.
