Trump Fails to Win Over Europe: Poll Shows Limited Appeal Even Among Ideological Allies

A new POLITICO poll in collaboration with Public First reveals that Donald Trump has failed to convince European public opinion, even among voters considered ideologically aligned. Despite his efforts to bolster right-wing populist movements in Europe, the poll shows limited appeal, with a significant portion of Europeans viewing him negatively. In Britain, where the Eurosceptic Reform UK party is gaining traction in the polls, around 50% of its supporters have a favorable view of Trump. However, in France and Germany, the percentages are much lower, with only about one in three voters of the far-right National Rally and Alternative for Germany (AfD) viewing him positively. The research, conducted in five European countries with a sample size of over 10,000 voters, reveals a complex landscape. While there is admiration for the “America First” policy, there is also distrust of Trump himself and reluctance to fully align with the United States. Even among voters of populist parties, those who had supported these parties in the past tend to be more negative towards Trump than newer voters. Overall, Trump’s image in Europe is negative, with two-thirds of respondents in France and Germany expressing unfavorable opinions. This poll comes at a time when the US government is seeking to cultivate the influence of “patriotic” European parties, highlighting the challenge it faces in building strong alliances in Europe.
