MP Alleges "Institutional Fraud" in Electricity Market

Published January 13, 2026, 14:30

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Kyriakos Chatzigiannis, alleges "institutional fraud" in the electricity market, claiming that the existing framework systematically hinders the development of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and energy storage. He points out that consumers are burdened with high prices due to the maintenance of inactive load on the grid, while some hold licenses for resale purposes. Furthermore, he states that energy storage is double-charged with network usage fees, increasing costs by approximately 12%. Mr. Chatzigiannis calls for immediate storage, grid improvement, and RES penetration, questioning the motives of those obstructing these developments. He believes that harmonization with European directives is fragmented, benefiting specific interests at the expense of the national economy and consumers.
