Zelensky Signals Willingness to Cede 20% of Ukraine in Potential Peace Deal

According to a New York Times report, during a confidential meeting in Jeddah, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, under instruction, marked a line on a map of Ukraine indicating a potential concession of 20% of Ukrainian territory to Russia in exchange for peace. This move represents a significant shift in stance from Zelensky, who had previously insisted on the recovery of every inch of lost land. The discussion began with acceptance of Donald Trump's proposal for an immediate ceasefire. Umerov, using a blue marker, outlined the borders Ukraine might accept, emphasizing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which Kyiv wants to regain control of due to safety concerns, and the Kinburn Spit, the recovery of which would secure access to Ukrainian shipyards. The American side, through Trump's advisors, appeared satisfied with Ukraine's flexibility. A proposal followed for an agreement that would include territorial concessions, Ukraine's accession to the EU (but not NATO), US or international management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, and pressure on Russia to return Kinburn Spit. The report highlights that this discussion took place at a critical moment, as US aid to Ukraine had stalled. The potential territorial concession is a heavy price, but the Ukrainian side appears to be considering it as a necessary sacrifice for peace and the survival of the country.
